The meaning behind “Baribun”
“Baribun” is a word in the Bundjalung language, a language spoken by Aboriginal people in Bundjalung Country in northeastern New South Wales and southeastern Queensland.
It directly translates to “dream”. It can also be associated with a dreamer who enjoys moving slowly across the land, planting seeds, and taking in nature. The word ‘Baribun” is often used in a metaphorical sense, relating to dreaming, envisioning, and a slower pace of life in connection with nature.
The word “Baribun” appears in the title of an artwork collection called Ondirei Ngorung Baribun (Night Sky Dreaming) by Brad Turner who was born, raised and paints on Bundjalung Country. His collection celebrates the spirit elders of Australia and their songlines.
“Baribun” is also used in a poem called Baribun/Dream by Samia Goudie further highlighting its connection to nature and dreams.
